So it’s goodbye to the smell of stale tobacco and pickled eggs as little by little we find ourselves in another bad movie, one in which we we’ll have to walk away with our tail between our legs (again) So it’s now no longer possible to spark up a cigarette in a bar, club café, you name it; wherever you fancy a comforting puff, you can’t enjoy it – except maybe at home. If yours is a household that allows such privileges! This time it’s for real. Yes the man means business this time, no half arsed exceptions as we’ve experienced over the last three years or so; remember when the anti smoking law was first introduced? Yeah, you know, it lasted about three weeks in Garito until, the mezzanine (the designated smoking area) became so overcrowded and choked by tobacco fumes, that we just had relapse the law and allow smoking in all areas again. Well, not any more. That’s all just a memory now, this time the law is pretty firm and will have to be enforced. I won’t bore you with details of fines we’d have to pay otherwise. Being the ex--smoker that I am, this isn’t all bad, at least we won’t all smell like an ashtray after work, or a night out, but I am not going to deny that this new anti smoking law has taken away a little bit more of our liberty. Step by step that privilege has been eroded by the Ministry of Heath. How much more will slip away in the future? We’ll see…

We are in February already! Yipeei! They are only four months to go and we’ll be back on the beach again!! And according to the Government, as of June, the rate of unemployment in this country will begin to come down. I’m not sure where this information comes from, but imagine and hope that this is true, that more people will have work and the summer will flourish in Mallorca once again, after all, how much longer can things go on the way they are at the moment? I’m not saying it’s the fault of ZP, we know what is to blame, but the thought of a Government run by opposition leader Mariano Rajoy and his cronies is more than I can bear… No thanks Mario.

Although the crisis is doing serious damage in the record industry, the small labels still survive, and thanks to vinyl too.! Yes, sales of 12” and LPs are on the up, more DJs are using it, and more is being sold in other areas of music too. This is fantastic! I’m all in favour of this, as a well recorded, and mastered slab of vinyl will always sound better than an mp3 file.

And talking of good vinyl, let me tell you about our guest this month. Like most djs begining their career in the 80s, DJMetro was influenced by Hip Hop, and Electrofunk. In the 90s things changed and these influences progressed to form the sound of Drum and Bass, and he became one of the biggest draws on the German dj scene, with a residency at the WWF club in Berlin. At the moment, he is producing House with Sebo K, although hi main activity is as manager of the Watergate club in Berlin. The rest of the month the cabin will be manned by your fave Garito residents: Kiko Navarro, Isaac Indart, Angel Costa, Uvete, Carlos, Chuss, Pepelink, and yours truly, who will be serving up some good vibes as ever.

Over the next weeks we will introduce some changes in the menu, with new dishes and some new features in the wine section. That’s everything for the moment.

Cheers, Nacho
