01.10Hello 2010! So, we have already crammed a lot in the first decade of this century: Wars, saints and sinners, economic crisis, the fear that all this causes, then more wars, some white collar embezzlement (well a lot actually) It’s enough to put the wind up anybody really isn’t it? Some centuries it was Santa Iglesia that was charged to put the fear of God into people with endless threats of torture. The priests, bishops and the army would be the watchmen, and keeping people in place by fear. The Watchmen may have changed tunics, but the base of everything continues to be the same: to put fear in the hearts of the population, and maintain the status quo. I think we are old and wise enough to make our own decisions and not to believe everything we are told. I was taught that the best way to get on in life is to work (almost a privilege these days) and that nothing comes without effort. But finding a job and your way in life is not an easy task, nor is running a business, especially in the unpredictable climate of the moment. I hope nobody thinks I’m being frivolous when I speak in this way. I’m not saying that the crisis was created as a way of levelling the playing field, and taking power away from the population. We can’t ignore the consequences of this crisis: Many people are now seriously in debt, have no job, and may have even lost their homes. I don’t like to begin the year on this tone, but it’s the reality of things. As I have said before, the only way to get out of this crisis is to use our money in an intelligent way, to support small businesses, like local independent bars and restaurants, mechanics, hairdressers, ect, ect… These small businesses are the pillars of the community. Hiding your money underneath a floor tile or leaving it all with La Caixa isn’t going to help.Dreams are what motivate us to get out of bed everyday. To say that the crisis does not affect to us would be a lie. People make cutbacks and downsize and we get by. We at Garito have the luck at least to maintain the same desire and enthusiasm to work and play music as we began with twelve years ago. Yes, it’s already been twelve years!! We just renew energy (like ENDESA), and plug on with the show. In these dozen years many things happened, too many. During this decade many of you have become parents, some in grandparents, and some of you have become a part of the history of Garito, which in itself has firm place in the popular culture of Palma. We don’t know what it will happen in the next few years, or even if we’ll still be around, but we do know that without your support we would not be what we are. Our sincerest thanks for sticking with us. We begin the new decade with some new features on the program. First off we are thinking of organizing some nights with live comedy and a band too. Yes, this is nothing new, it’s all the rage in BerlIn and NY these days, and we think it will add a nice change to the club. Also, if you remember we had the first exhibition by Jose Palma, titled " OCNI", and his month it’s the turn of Carlos Lausin. on the same day of San Sebastian, Tuesday 19th, which will be followed by a session by Tap_on. On Kings night there will be a session by Mr Kiko Navarro, alongside Willie Graff, and yours truly! The Three Kings in the cabin no less!! We might not bring incense, mir and most definitely not gold; but we’ll certainly have some good music! To close the program for the month we have one of our good friends from Germany in the cabin again. Perhaps we could pass the introductions to this guy form Karlsrue, but for those that don’t already know, Kristian is half of the duo known as Ame, who are part of the Sonar Kollecktive in Berlin. After a good number of releases (like the successful Rej), and with the restlessness of an independent artist, they decided to start up their own label alongside Dixon, with the collaboration of such significant artists as Tokyo Black Star and Henrik Schwarz. Their sound has evolved significantly throughout these years, and they are without doubt the authentic regenerators of the sound of 21st century. House music. That is everything for the moment my good people!!. Cheers to you all, and see you soon in Garito. Nacho Velasco |
