03.10What a wonderful site! Calm, solid, and slowly turning on itself, far out in space. The blue planet steadily maintains it’s orbit, although some scientists are trying to prove that after the last earthquake in Chile, the Earth’s has shifted slightly off it’s axis, some 6cm apparently. The consequences of this means that days will be shorter, although this is only speculation. If I were observing the Earth from the camera installed in the International Space station, then everything would be so small and so insignificant, that it is practically impossible to think about me and my life down here. I’m just a a cog in the machine that keeps the infrastructure turning, the way it has done since modern civilisation began in Roman times - and developed into something similar to what we know today. The Romans gave the world many things: modern cities, currency, power, corruption, war, and ultimately the empire collapsed, a victim of all the above. Does this sound familiar? In these times of great change and instability, one could ask if history may repeat itself? Will a new civilisation conquer the planet again? Some say that 2012 will be a decisive year for our planet, and with all that is happening with our weather system; earthquakes, tsunamis, unpredictable weather patterns, coupled with a global infrastructure bursting at it’s seams, then I’m actually starting to believe all the hype surrounding that prophecy. Now back to the club stuff: Everyone knows that Garito was once a rock bar, and that the sound system used to ring out the sounds of the best 70s rock. Our 10 anniversary cd sleeve is tribute to that period. And so it is that we will be bringing some live music back to Garito this month in the shape of a local outfit called Blend. The Majorcan band led by the very versatile and multi faceted artist Marcos Martinez saw the light of day in the middle of the 2009, appearing to the public in some low key gigs. With only a year of studio time under his belt, and with help of his brother, Mr David Martinez – a familiar face on the Mallorcan club scene, Marcos has been developing his style bouncing off various influences and movements on the island. He will be accompanied by Andres Moral, who is not only possibly the best skateboarder on the island, but also a mean guitarist too, also Coloma Ndongo will be joining in on vocals. For the first time in quite few years, we have a live band in Garito. Come down and see for yourselves! On Friday 26th we will have Jef K in cabin, The bad boy of French House music makes his second visit Garito Cafe. He began making records at the beginning of 90' s, when House music revolutionized the floors of best dance of clubs in the world. He has had prestigious residences at clubs like the Rex in Paris, Fuse in Brussels, and Robert Johnson in Frankfurt have given him the opportunity him to travel the world with a full suitcase in the form of music. With a host productions, remixes and compilations under his belt, and the his labels, Silver Network and Crack & Speed too, Jef is one of those rare artists who have not been distracted by trends and fashions, and has stayed faithful to his principles, with a very seductive and elegant style. It seems that the winter just doesn’t want to end! Normally spring is well on the way by this time of the month in March, but we are still shivering in less than 14c, (and in an old Mallorcan house with no central heating, that means it’s colder inside than out!) which is used to be the winter low even on a bad day here! We’ve had rain almost every week since September, which again was something unusual here, when a decade ago the average a rainfall if counted in days, would have been around 12 per year!! I think we’ve had that many each fortnight this year already …and to think I moved here for the climate!! Cheers, and see you in Garito - Nacho Velasco |
