Consolidation (2003 – 2008)
It was during 2004, when Garito Café would focus more on electronic music and would set up its Thursday-Friday-Saturdays program with different styles.
A new musical style is starting in 2004: electronic music is invading everything, as if it was a virus. Thursdays are gaining popularity and an accelerated rhythmic growth. It is still in a free style move, but its rhythm is going up a level. Broken beats, house and drum n’ bass are flowing alternatively and a new type of electronic house music is also flourishing at this time in the European scene. Minimal house is also having its first incursions, with very stimulating results and the Germans are proving to be the best producers of this new style of music. These nights are also gaining popularity, as a techno music DJ from Palma signs up to mix with Nacho. In these “back to back” sessions, Angel Costa and Velasco join their own musical postures. Angel is more influenced by house and Nacho by techno. “We like everything we are abstract when it comes to music. It is like painting on a white canvas; you start with brushes and finish with the finest painting tools, or vice versa.”
One day, Angel would tell Nacho about a common friend between them: “I would like for you to invite Issac Indart,” said Angel, to what Nacho responded: “but doesn’t he play tribal house?” This type of music is already on the downside and Nacho also dislikes it. When the response that the Valladolid DJ had stated reached the ears of Indart, he would not get mad as everyone thought he would, instead he would start laughing. The result: Issac would join Thursday’s team in mid 2004. A little later, Tatto would join them, who is a DJ that grew up with the influence of Cerviño. The four of them would start enjoying mixing together and this is how the formula that is still very popular today was created: “Eletrotecnomastoideo”, which is a combination of minimal, Detroit techno, electronic house and other interesting and notorious sounds from this country, which brings to mind a personal story that has to do with this. While having a few drinks with Rainer Truby, Nacho was given the nickname of “Great Reserve”. “I like it a lot, it makes me laugh. I give myself this name on the flyers whenever I feel like it, as I am the one who creates them.”
Wednesdays are taking the protagonist part of the old day Thursdays. Pedro Vidal (Tap_On) is focusing on the cdj-1000 and is programming hip-hop, funk and rare groove sessions. In order to put the balance in place, Fridays are taking a slower rhythm, as the cabin is being filled with colorful music: disco lounge, classic American house and some soul electronic music. Danny Krivit, Joey Negro and Mr. Fingers are just a few of the DJ’s that you can listen to during these days. Even though the public is a little older on Fridays, they are also more exquisite and choosing when it comes to the music that they listen to. They are authentic gourmet people with fine taste in music. Saturdays are for dancing to “house music” and ii is also special guest night. Nacho is still selecting European and American artists and is offering them the cabin. On the dance floor, there are lots of people, who want to have fun and this provides the necessary feedback. DJ’s always leave Mallorca with a great taste in their mouth.
The list of DJs keeps growing: Wagon Cookin’, Peter Kruder, Phonique, Atjazz, Charles Webster, Tricksi, C-Rock, Swag, Danilo Plessow, Dixon, Jimpster… Artists speak great about Garito and of their public as well. The island attracts these artists and the idea of performing in a small club, with great sounds does so too. Furthermore, Nacho provides them with a place to stay at in his own home. Collaboration is a fundamental part of this and the circle is getting wider. Now, there is a direct connection with artists and this is partly due to the friendships that have been developing over time. Redbull has also joined the cause, by collaborating with a sponsorship, which allows Garito to bring new talents to its cabin.
Uvete, Eva and Nacho are aware of the fact that the establishment needs a little remodeling, which is why some changes are planned during the summer of 2006. A change, which will respect the establishment’s esthetics, as it always has. It was during September and October, when all the work would be planned for and a team with Benji, Cucha and his brother was created. This team would be in charge of the make-up for the establishment. “Cucha designed the new furniture and the interiors of the bar and we also suggested a location change for the cabin.”Nacho wanted it on the top level, so that they could have more intimacy. “A rumor in Myspace would start to gain popularity and two different stories were told: those who wanted the cabin in the lower level and those who wanted it in the second level. We finally opted to place it in the middle level”. The permanent obsession that he has about sound, would lead him to change all of the musical equipment. Funktion One would be established, which is a system that is breaking all rules around the world. The kitchen would also increase in size and it would be relocated as well. The restrooms would lose their white decoration and got a more intimate one. The establishment’s pipe and electric systems are also renovated and after a month in the workings, Garito would open its doors to the public again in December of 2006. “There were people who would ask what we had done to the place, as they saw it the same as before, which was our objective”.
In 2007, with the establishment already redecorated, Garito Café-Bar-Club, would launch its zenith. Its kitchen begins to give its first positive results. People start gathering infront of the plates that are served by the hand of Su-Chi, who incorporated a few changes to the traditional menu, giving it a fusion touch. Nacho would count with Issac Indart to conduct the weekend nights. “He is constantly helping; he is one of the few DJs on this island who is still in shape. He has known how to evolve and adapt to the new times, without ever forgetting were he came from. He is the best.” “Great Reserve” also gives a chance to young DJs from the island (Vik-T, Ainz, Mark Os) and keeps recruiting some of the best artists in the European electronic music industry: Manuel Tur, Lil’Tony, Marcus Worgull, Nacho Marco… brother Garayalde (Wagon Cookin’), who would get themselves installed on the island during this summer and would enhance the place with their “live sets”. Thursday nights have also gained a lot of popularity, with a new public as well and which has led Garito to start its weekends a day earlier.
People could go to the classic establishment in the darsena on any day of 2008, order something to snack on or have a complete meal, while listening George Benson being mixed by Masters at Work, as the electronic poetry of Ursula Rucker. The public is renewing itself all the time, but you can still see that father with less hair on his head, who had his crazy nights when he was young and who visits the bar every now and then, to place himself in orbit again. The red Phillips sign that once draw his attention is still there, as a witness of the absolutely amazing thousand nights that he once spent here. Just as Nacho once wrote in one of his monthly newsletters, “We have created jobs, offered entertainment and had fun producing our albums during these years. The club has also encouraged local artists and contributed in the communication of new technologies within the electronic music industry. The most important thing of all is that we have made tons of new friends along the way and we have created a great family a step at a time.” And yes, Nacho, Garito’s great family –public and employees- is still unified.
We have had more than three thousand six hundred nights of music until today and we want them to be a lot more. It has already been more than ten years since that Thursday night in June when Garito Café Bar Club first opened its doors and you have been on our side of Ca’n Barbara and thanks to that all of this has been possible. There is an energy that renews itself night after night, in the secret corner that is the DJ cabin. This has formed a music culture that has been growing with the soul of Garito since its beginnings, with Jose Luis Juan until the never ending collection of Nacho’s digital tracks. It has been the sound, but it has also taken a lot of effort, from our cool staff and the loyalty of our public, in order for us to stay on top. We hope that everyone who has contributed to make Garito what it is today can assist to the anniversary event tonight and we wish you were here.
