The First Mallorca Flyer

The First Mallorca Flyer

Los flyers de Garito son una referencia en la isla por su diseño, libertad creativa y sentido del humor. Además, fueron los primeros!

Garito’s flyers have been recognized in the island, for their designs, creative liberty and good sense of humor. Furthermore, they were the first!

For me, everything began in April of 2000, apart from some lose samples, like (Spanish Pantalon / September 98, VIP Card Presentation / March 2000). Pinchaba Pepe Link had a Friday session named “The House of Jazz” and when Nacho realized, what the cost of producing flyers for a single event was, as he did not think that he could promote the events on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays with the same cash as well, we got our first Mallorca flyer.  We now have our best monthly program plasticized and in full color yet, which is really amazing. If anyone knows of one that has been better in the past, speak now or forever hold your peace.
After that moment, I was like an elf in a mushroom forest, picking the best images from my photo archive, with only one demand: that they had something to do with the current month; or … From some of the graphic material that I found on the streets during May 00 or from some of my mother’s wedding trip pictures in July 00 or the polemic picture of Pepa Charro, dressed as a “sleep walker” during the Mallorcan payesa of November 00; or a picture of someone on the floor, looking suspiciously happy during a rave in April 01 or with an airplane overflying the tallest building in Palma after that scary September 11th in October 01. In most of these cases, there was something comical about them and in some cases we took the creative liberty, of sending the original picture to the print house, without someone ever seeing it.  Of course, Helvetica would also be transmitting all of the information to us as well.

I especially remember the art work from the third anniversary of “3”Giratorium, which was produced by Toni Socias and was hung from Garito’s roof, converting itself in a  two meter  high “disco ball”. The launch of Black Nights’ first recompilation album with its phrase, “I had never danced so much” in July 01 at the Garito Café, as well as the Isladencanta Festival: “I won’t stop dancing,” and the already classic and still being used phrase, “Let’s dance to house music,” which I heard an English colleague say once, when we were on our way to Garito and he traduced it in a literal way from English to Spanish.  It was this phrase, which inspired the set of flyers from the first half of 2002, with my slippers, mocho and Calamares my cat, scanned in them.  I have even received messages from my friend Silvia from Space in Ibiza, as continuations of that phrase like, “My legs are shaking from dancing to too much house music.” The fact is, that our goal has always been to make people dance, whether its inside or outside the cabin, we even made this an order! (March 01). I  also don’t want to forget about the Paco’s, whose happy hour tickets have always to accomplish this goal (dance…).
I can only resume these years of friendship and collaboration with the partners and waiters at Garito, with what I answered some of my Barcelona friends when they asked me, how had my trip to the island been? That we do not have that many sites in Palma (in the past, these were much less, than they are today!), but that I feel like I am at home when I am in Garito and that I enjoying walking through its doors, kissing people, laughing all night long and dancing until my legs feel all shaky. To what they would stare at me, with a certain envy in their eyes, trying to say that it is exactly what they are in need of.

Congratulations Nacho, Eva, Uve and all of the people who have worked at Garito and let’s get ready for another 10!
